The origins of Positano are lost in the mists of time, where history overlaps with the legend. As often happened in passing, in fact, the myth to replace the lack of reliable data that tells us that Positano was founded by Neptune, god of the sea, for the love of the nymph he loved Pasitea, hence the name of the city.
The news about the first settlements provide us with news about the Phoenicians and the Greeks successively, we must go back to Roman times for some of the testimonies. The presence of urban settlements in the basement of the town of Positano and the territory are not only visible, but were studied at least since the eighteenth century. In particular, it is often mentioned in a Roman villa, part of the foundations of the church of S. Mary Assunta, almost certainly buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD C. Today we are bringing everything to light with the excavations financed by the Campania Region, which allowed many archaeological finds.
With the fall of the Roman Empire Positano became a part of the Republic of Amalfi, the first maritime republic, and went through a period of flourishing trade by sea with other Mediterranean countries.
Unfortunately followed too sad times, especially with the Angevin and Aragonese domination that we saw the district repeatedly exposed to injuries before the Saracen pirates and then those Turks. To defend themselves from constant pirate raids, the Positano's defense erected three watchtowers that still make a fine display in Fornillo for transmission and Riverside, and others in town. In the same period the pirates to escape the mountain villages of Montepertuso expanded and Nocelle to harbor the inhabitants of Positano and Laura. In 700 there was a period of prosperity as is shown by many late Baroque villas built along the eastern side. The Unification of Italy forced many inhabitants of Positano, like many other southerners, to emigrate to America, where fortune smiled on some of them.
After the First World War, in which Positano paid a high toll, the country became home for many artists and writers Russians and Germans who elected him to their home enjoying finally, peace and tranquility.
The tourism boom has had since World War II, but despite a strong positive development has retained its characteristic vertical structure and its solar architecture with its beautiful and scenic spots. With their innate sense of hospitality, Positano became one of the top and maintain the most famous tourist destinations of morndo whole.
